Hepatology Digest: As Secretary-General of this year’s EASL Congress, what are the standout features in terms of agenda design, communication formats and content arrangement? Which cutting-edge topics and research findings in hepatology have caught your attention most at the congress?
Prof. Shawcross: This year’s congress encompasses a rich and diverse range of academic research, professional education and industry advocacy activities. Its core highlight is the achievement of genuine globalisation. Over the past decade, EASL has moved beyond European-focused hepatology research and devoted itself to advancing liver science across the globe.
The congress attracted 8,520 participants from 112 countries across five continents. Hepatology experts around the world gathered to discuss highly topical issues, bringing forward fresh academic perspectives, cutting-edge technologies and latest research outcomes, which have endowed the congress with unique academic value.
A major highlight was the inaugural meeting of the International Chinese Young Scholars Alliance for the Study of the Liver held during the event, which for the first time hosted in-depth discussions centering on young Chinese researchers. The congress also welcomed numerous professionals from Latin America, Africa, Asia and other regions. Diverse regional perspectives have made the academic exchanges more comprehensive and professional.
In addition, the Global Hepatology Poster Tour at the congress focused on research hotspots and latest progress in liver diseases from all regions, covering locally distinctive research directions. It fully embodies the congress’s global academic representativeness and is also an innovative segment that I fully embrace.

Hepatology Digest: As one of the most influential academic events in global hepatology, what irreplaceable international impacts has the EASL Congress delivered over the years in uniting medical professionals worldwide, facilitating academic exchanges and unifying consensus on clinical diagnosis and treatment?
Prof. Shawcross: The EASL Congress has evolved into a truly global academic summit for hepatology. I first attended the EASL Congress in 2002. Back then, the event was heavily regionally constrained, mainly serving Europe, and its research scope was limited to viral hepatitis alone, with very little focus on other branches of hepatology.
After two decades of development — especially remarkable progress over the past ten years — EASL’s academic system now covers the full spectrum of liver diseases, including cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, liver cancer, cholestasis, public health and advocacy and basic science. This year, brand-new sessions on liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery have been added, further expanding the academic boundaries and providing targeted academic content for professionals in all sub-specialties.
Meanwhile, the congress always focuses on shared global challenges related to liver diseases. Given the rapidly rising prevalence of liver diseases worldwide, we have long strived to raise global awareness of liver health threats and call on the international community to jointly address this major public health issue.
On May 21, a key resolution was passed by vote at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, officially recognising steatotic (fatty) liver disease as a non-communicable disease enabling it to be integrated into the global system for the prevention, control and management of non-communicable diseases. This means liver diseases are formally recognized as a major global non-communicable disease. Member states can now carry out systematic liver disease prevention and treatment with the support of relevant policies, collaborative networks and prevention frameworks. This important agenda has been listed as a key focus at this EASL Congress to mobilize global efforts to advance the implementation of liver disease prevention and control work.

Hepatology Digest: Faced with the continuously changing global burden of liver diseases, what key roles do you hope EASL and its annual congress will continue to play in advancing global liver health in the future? How will you further deepen international collaboration and coordination?
Prof. Shawcross: EASL acts as a core academic exchange platform for the global hepatology community, connecting practitioners from all over the world. Our research vision has fully shifted from a European perspective to a global one. While remarkable progress has been made worldwide in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious liver diseases such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C amid the growing global liver disease burden, non-communicable liver diseases have gradually become the dominant health challenge. Conditions that once posed limited threats, including metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease, have now become major concerns in global hepatology, requiring us to adopt new approaches to meet evolving clinical and research demands.
The World Health Organization has set the goal of eliminating hepatitis C across the globe by 2030. Asia has achieved outstanding results in viral hepatitis elimination, though many gaps still exist in some other regions. Against this backdrop, EASL plans to prioritize viral hepatitis elimination over the next three years. This year’s congress has officially launched the three-year Viral HOPE Hepatitis Elimination Initiative, targeting three major types of viral hepatitis: hepatitis B, hepatitis C and hepatitis D. We aim to unite hepatologists worldwide to push forward the global eradication of viral hepatitis, which is another highly valuable new initiative of this congress.

Hepatology Digest: China has a huge population of liver disease patients, and its rapid development in clinical care and scientific research has drawn wide international attention. What is your assessment of the participation and academic achievements of Chinese experts and scholars at this year’s EASL Congress?
Prof. Shawcross: We are delighted to see many Chinese scholars taking part in this congress. We highly value the academic strength brought by researchers from China and other parts of Asia. As I mentioned earlier, the inaugural meeting of the International Chinese Young Scholars Alliance for the Study of the Liver held here has shared real-world challenges, local perspectives and practical experience in liver disease diagnosis, treatment and research in China with the global community.
It is commendable that China has achieved rapid development in cutting-edge liver disease research, innovative technologies and artificial intelligence — especially liver imaging technology. Chinese researchers have reached world-leading recognition in liver cancer screening, identification and the development of therapeutic regimens. EASL always actively accepts high-quality academic achievements from China and continues to deepen cooperation with the Chinese hepatology community.
Currently, China is the largest source of manuscript submissions to Journal of Hepatology, EASL’s flagship journal. This figure directly demonstrates the strong research strength of China’s hepatology sector. We fully recognize and appreciate the tremendous contributions made by Chinese scholars to this congress, which have greatly enriched its value and features.
